Effective date: June 1, 2025
This Privacy Policy explains what data the Vocab Stash Chrome extension handles, how it is stored, and what rights you have. We believe privacy should be simple, so we've kept this as straightforward as possible.
When you use Vocab Stash, the following information is saved locally on your device using your browser's built-in storage API (chrome.storage.local):
| Data | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Selected word or phrase | The text you highlight and choose to save. |
| Translation | The translation you type in manually. |
| Notes | Any optional notes you add to a word entry. |
| Tags | Labels you assign to organize your vocabulary. |
| Source URL | The address of the page where you saved the word, so you can revisit the original context. |
| Date & time | When the word was saved, used for sorting and filtering. |
| Settings & preferences | Your chosen theme, language labels, popup toggle, and max selection length. |
All of this data resides exclusively in your browser. It is never sent to any external server, third-party service, or remote database.
Vocab Stash does not collect, store, or have access to any of the following: personal information such as your name, email address, or location; browsing history or browsing activity beyond the specific page URL you choose to save a word from; analytics, telemetry, or usage statistics of any kind; cookies, advertising identifiers, or fingerprinting data; nor any data from your Google account.
We do not use any third-party analytics tools, crash reporters, or tracking scripts. The extension contains no ads and makes no network requests whatsoever.
The extension requests a small number of browser permissions. Here is exactly what each one does and why it is needed:
| Permission | Why it's needed |
|---|---|
| contextMenus | Adds the "Add to Vocab Stash" option to your right-click menu so you can save highlighted words. |
| storage | Saves your vocabulary and settings locally inside your browser. |
| activeTab | Allows the extension to read the text you've selected on the current tab and display the save form. It only activates when you explicitly use the extension. |
No permission grants the extension access to your data on other tabs, your browsing history, or any information beyond what is needed to save the word you selected.
Vocab Stash does not share any data with third parties because it does not transmit any data off your device in the first place. There are no servers to send data to, no partnerships that involve data exchange, and no monetization that relies on your information.
Export: You can export your entire word list at any time as a CSV file by clicking the "Export CSV" button in the extension popup. The file is generated locally and downloaded directly to your device.
Deletion: You can delete individual words using the remove button, or delete all words at once from the Settings panel. You can also uninstall the extension at any time, which will remove all stored data from your browser.
Since your data never leaves your device, there is nothing for us to delete on our end.
Vocab Stash is a general-audience tool suitable for language learners of all ages. Because the extension does not collect any personal information whatsoever, there are no special concerns regarding children's data under COPPA or similar regulations.
If we ever update this Privacy Policy, we will revise the "Effective date" at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will include a notice in the extension's update notes. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
